Always possible..but if done strong and hard, the persons natural reaction is to sink to the ground to lessen the pressure on the thumb joint.

Good stuff, I'm a doorman and get blokes always trying to crush my hand with handshakes. Learned this technique years ago and it comes in handy,more importantly works!!
