One more thing before I leave this thread..go back and watch some in his prime Ali.(pre draft lay off). Very interesting and shows just how good he was.

By the way when I said "hate the Japanese" I meant of course the language or rather OUR inability to understand it. Great footage. Thanks andreacheoor2!

I thought the old man pulled this fight out. Even with Parkinson's and what? 39? Ali slipped and blocked a lot of punches.Hate the Japanese.Turn off your volume and watch this fight rd by rd. Anyway I am glad Ali didn't get the decision. I think he would of kept fighting.

Ali won this fight. With full blown Parkinsons and at about 90 years old. He paved the way for the title of Tyson by softening up Trevor Berbick. And I am Italian and I say Rocky Marciano never fought anybody.

Even though his performance was greatly improved from the Holmes fight, Ali's skills are clearly diminished here. It's one of boxing's saddest chapters when Ali's legacy ends in such an anti-climactic manner. It was very evident toward the latter part of his career that he was plagued with Parkinson's disease, note that his quick wit and vociferous demeanor slowed to a low sounding slur by the late 70's (after the Norton fight in '76). The fact that this fight took place was a travesty.

This is a very good summary, I think. Ali actually looked surprisingly good in this fight: I think he threw more punches in the first two rounds here than in the entire Holmes fight. He did a creditable job and ended the fight standing, which is probably all he really wanted.

My thoughts exactly tentenesk. He said he wanted to make a better showing since the Holmes fight was so terrible but I also remember Dundee saying training for Holmes and this fight, the sparring partners were all over him. The fights themselves was hard enough as far as punishment goes so the training was just as bad. |
