We usually judge by timbre, range, and depth.Unfortunately Dylan only has unique timbre, absolutely no range, and a pretty flat voice. One can argue that many great singers like Kurt Cobain and many others, don't have amazing voices either... But nobody argues that, their talent is measured by excelling skills in songwriting.If you want examples of great voices listen to the Beatles, Queen, etc. Those bands have amazing voices.

But he does have a great voice.... he is a great singer. What standards do we go by when we judge a singer? The tension in his voice, the soul behind it is incredible, lyrically as you said on another level.... If he is not a good singer then neither is Bob Marley...

it is so not about his voice, dylan himself will admitt that he is not a great singer, its about his lyrics. the messages in his songs.

tim1062 who would you consider to have a good voice? Pavarotti,Daniel O'Donnel,Eartha Kitt? Music isn't just about tone and production, it should be about life and experience, about thought and emotion. I personnally think Dylan does this better than anybody. As for a recent video, try Blood in My Eyes.

What is a good voice? Is it the ability to hit a note properly? Or is it the ability to express emotion and spirit? Any idiot can hit a note properly but only a hand full of people can miss a note and still have the ability to make us feel their emotion and spirit.
