Perhaps through the Africa Channel on cable they will get the promtion and recognition they deserve. Aren't they the number one African Music charting in the UK?Keep in mind that it is much harder to be considered mainstream when nobody understands the language.

I believe that these are touareg from northern mali originaly... but a lot of them(touareg of mali) became refugees in algeria because of the opression they suffer from other ethnic groups in that country as well as niger...I shall confirm their true origines in the coming month as I am off to the algerian sahara for another treking holiday with my brother touaregs(imouhag).the only official recognition this great band had was when they played with santana in montreux, listen to his comments...

It's because American music is mainstream, and heavily promoted.Tinariwen are an amazing band, I was fortunate enough to see them live a few months ago when they toured the UK.The fact is most English/europeans/ americans, won't listen to music they don't understand.But on a bright side it keeps the music purer beacuae as a band they don't become a money spinning machine for a record company.

What annoys me is how an american guitarist can come up with a riff thats kinda cutting edge and be considered "one of the greatest". Yet poor old ibrahim here invents a whole new style (like hendrix) and gets f*ck all!
