most martial arts are good, but it always depends on the person. just because one tai boxer can beat up someone trained in akido, or vice versa, doesnt mean one is better than the other

I have to agree with rumdrinker32.

sean34, i do respect all martial arts. considering ive trained in many since i was 13. i think aikido is a great martial art. but there is a big difference between sparring some one who trains in thai and fighting full out a professional thai fighter. besides, my original comments were based on how segal was a jerk, not disrespecting aikido. a dear friend of mine has practiced aikido for 10 years. and it was him who admitted that he would never mess with a thai or a bjj fighter.

it can be in a mixed fight, maybe not as effective as one would like it to be. what single art could prevail in the UFC etc? all the fighters have varied skills, hence, "mixed martial arts" Strength of will determine the ability to overcome and allow fear to motivate, that is the strength that matters. In Aikido the symmetry of attack is not linear but circular. Strength is an illusion the purpose is leverage balance and motion. I've beaten skilled taekwondo and thai boxing guys. I know this.

Then how come no one can use it effectively in a mma fight?
sean34nite (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
you say you respect all martial arts but go on to insinuate that aikido practitioners aren't real fighters. i've fought muay guys a few times and they all come in with swift kicks, all i've had to do was shihōnage (fore-direction throw) and the result is inevitable. to me aikido is superior because you redirect your opponent's attack with suppressed force, just my opinion.

aikido is all about blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on. you'll be surprised how defensive it is in real situations, i've had experience

to say he can beat any thai boxer is an ignorant response. ive personally witnessed aikido practitioners getting laid out by a swift leg kick. i respect all martial arts. but only those who prove their stuff. and thai boxers prove it every day in the ring. not just in demos and such. watch some ramon dekker vids and rethink your statement, cause its a pretty bold one. segal is an actor, not superman. thai boxers are fighters. nothing fake or staged in what they do.

he may be a jerk, but im certain he could beat the shit outta any thai boxer. |
