June 2003The violence spilling out of Brazil's slums or 'favelas' has made the country's two major cities more dangerous than most war zones. Children in Rio de Janeiro are eight times more likely to die violently than those in the West Bank. "They live on a kill or be killed basis," states anthropologist Luke Dowdney, who has spent five years studying the favelas. "If they don't kill someone when they're told to, they will be killed."

This is the worst thing in the poor countries: The slums and street children that are shot death while sleeping or which starve to death! :o(( And the worst of all: Their own society ignores them people live in their own small world thinking that the problem would some day disappear. But it won't. The main reason for this is the fact that no one cares a sh*** for them in their countries! Unbelieveable!!!

Some Brazilians & others commenting video are being impartial. I am a JA/AM living in Brazil with my Brazilian spouse. Brazil needs a lot of changes: Piracy is extremely bad, Sao Paulo & Rio have a high level of violence, & an unbiased local will tell you that violence & children on the street are pervasive here, buildings are unkempt & plagued by graffiti from gangs, etc. Don't be upset with the US because someone's work. Oh, & racism against Blacks is no different than in many other places.

It's not in every city in Brazil where those thing happen...
