high kick can be effective in real fight if you set it up properly and shotokan has speed and power but if you compare it other style it will be different because every martial arts has its different style and their is no such thing as a perfect martial arts every martial arts has its defectiveness. i did practice sports type shotokan karate before and try to switch to self defense style because in our country their are a lot of old school types of killers and i came from a poor country.

for the most part, i agree.but a good portion of styles utilized in MMA originate from various sources other than "Japanese arts" as well. Muay Thai and wrestling are just a couple of other examples. to me (as an MMA enthusiast) MMA is not a "style" in and of itself per se. it's what the name implies...a "mix" of styles utilizing the best techniques for a particular fighter.

What many MMA enthusiast dont understand is that what ever you see in MMA originated in Japanese arts such as Karate-Jutsu and Ju-Jutsu or modern Karate-do and Judo. This video is for technique illustration purposes. If you really want to see the speed of JKA karate, watch Japan's JKA tournaments. Many of these guys have serious knock out power, if they want to release it !!

People who used to say high kicks are not useful in a real fight had to shut up when St Pierre defeated Matt Hughes ("the best MMA fighter pound by pound"), with a jodan mawashi geri.
